Geology Summary

Polymetamorphic metasediment host rocks from the Precambrian to Cambrian. Stratiform mineralization containing Cu-Fe ores within amphibolite-rich orthogneisses and Zn-Pb sulphide ores within paragneisses associated with felsic metamagmatites. A complex, multi-event mineralizing system.

Historical Production

Earliest mining began in 1539, focused on silver-rich galena for coin mints. Lead and silver production increased through the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Platzertal operation was known as the highest-altitude mine in Europe, working at 2,500–3,000m elevation.
