Geology Summary

Characterized by the “Zone of the Old Gneisses” and the Bündnerschiefer zone. The Old Gneisses contain Paleozoic metamorphic rocks: paragneisses, mica schists, granite gneisses, tonalites, quartzites, and marbles. Key deposits are copper/polymetallic with chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and magnetite, plus gold and silver in certain deposits. The Bündnerschiefer contains stratiform pyrite-chalcopyrite VMS deposits associated with prasinites.

Historical Production

Copper, sulphides, scheelite, antimony, and silver all produced throughout the Zone of the Old Gneisses, with documentation of antimony and silver production from the 16th century. The Tessenberg, Panzendorf, and Villgraten mines are the principal historical operations.
